Mowogo at the 2022 NOAC

 NOAC2022 1

Greetings and Salutations, Fellow Wearers of the Arrow!

We hope this finds each of you well as the summer comes to a close. And for those of you who saw that this message was from me: yes, it is a long one, but you are in luck as it is mainly pictures!

NOAC2022 2

This past week Mowogo Lodge participated in the 2022 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) that was held at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. Yes, it was strange being around all of the orange (especially for this alum of the Red & Black!). It was a week of immersion into the Order of the Arrow and Scouting with Sisters and Brothers from all parts of the country as well as from other nations.

Each day began with training in all aspects of the Order: Ceremonies, Native American culture and traditions, the Ordeal, the Brotherhood, the Vigil Honor, Lodge and Chapter Operations, Membership Growth, and many, many other topics. The afternoons focused on competitions and evaluations in ceremonies, sports, and programs on how the Order touches many lives from many walks of life. The evenings focused all participants on gathering together at arena shows and one night with other members from the Eastern Region of the Order of the Arrow.

NOAC2022 3

And patch trading…well, patch trading happened all the time…24 hours a day (or at least that what it seemed like)!
According to our Lodge Chief Jacob Ball, who served on the Conference Communication Staff, Mowogo Lodge had the 6th largest lodge contingent at NOAC which had more than 6500 participants in total. Section E-6, which is led by our own James Chalmers as Section Chief, had more participants attend the conference than any other Section from around the country.

Prior to arriving at NOAC, the Mowogo Lodge contingent spent some time at the
“Trade-o-ree” https://www.bsator.com/what-is-a-tor/ (click on the link to learn more about Trade-o-rees)

That was also being held in Knoxville just prior to the start of NOAC. Thanks go to Brothers Kevin Jones, Ricky Daniels, and Todd Kelly for their efforts to demonstrate the art and larger scope of the world of patch trading and Scouting memorabilia to our contingent.

NOAC2022 4

Mowogo Lodge fielded teams in the intramural sports of Flag Football, Volleyball, and Ultimate Frisbee. All of our teams showed great effort and sportsmanship in all three. While not reaching the NOAC Conference Championships, each team to reach far into the playoffs and earned the respect of every team they played. Thanks to all of our youth that participated and gave everything they had to every game!

NOAC2022 5

During the arena show on Wednesday, Day 3 of the conference, the show ended with a reminder and special request to remember all who have gone that inspired us in out participation in the Order of the Arrow and passed the torch on to us to carry for others to be guided by. It was a memorable and appropriate way to pay respects to all of the sisters and brothers that have gone before us and that continue to inspire our service.

NOAC2022 6

It was also great to see Mowogo brothers that have moved on including Dawson and Jason Roth as well as Sven Rundman. Time and distance have done nothing to decrease the bond of brotherhood. Always a good feeling!

NOAC2022 7

At the end of 2019, a national program called “Thrive” was introduced as a way to connect lodge leadership with national leadership to both support lodge operations as well as shared ideas from other lodges. Honestly, I was still somewhat new in the role of Lodge Adviser then and was apprehensive about what this program might involve. Not many knew what the program entailed or what the goals were from what I gathered. However, we agreed to participate in the program with an open mind to see if Mowogo Lodge could benefit from the experience. And then the pandemic hit in 2020. The brothers with the Thrive program stayed with us and we met every other week for a few months and then once a month as our work with them came to a close. It was perfect timing as they kept our leadership engaged through a difficult time. We continued to meet through the beginning of 2021 and the Thrive Connect Team served as sounding boards and consultants and I can say they played an important part in the success of our 2021 Spring Induction Event in March of 2021, the largest Ordeal induction event in the country after the beginning of the pandemic.

NOAC2022 8

The lead of the Thrive Connect Team that worked with Mowogo Lodge, Matt Kusche, did a great job in supporting our lodge and our lodge leadership during this time. On Friday, Day 5 of NOAC, Matt sought us out and we finally got to meet him in person. It was one of the highlights of the conference for me as he won me over and relieved my apprehension of how Thrive might impact Mowogo Lodge. I also had the opportunity to meet his father, Kris. Kris stepped down from the role of Lodge Adviser for Kittan Lodge of the Twin Rivers Council in New York state. We spent some time discussing his challenges, our challenges, and our shared challenges in the coming future (we share more with our New York Sisters and Brothers than one might think!). Matt just completed his term as the Director of the OA High Adventure program at the Sea Base in the Florida Keys this summer and will being his final year in his Ph.D. program in Marine Biology. Thank you, Matt, for your continued support and interest in Mowogo Lodge. Please know that your support during a trying and difficult time was needed and appreciated.

NOAC2022 9

The 2022 NOAC was also special for Mowogo Lodge in that we witnessed one of our own be recognized in a national setting for service to the Order of the Arrow beyond the lodge level. Vigil Honor Brother Jason Stribling is a 2022 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) given by the National Order of the Arrow Committee. At the arena show on Tuesday, Day 2 at NOAC, all of the 2020 and 2022 DSA recipients were individually recognized and brought before the crowd. Members of our contingent got the chance to congratulate Jason following the show. In addition, Vigil Honor Brother Lane Bridges made a special trip to Knoxville to share the experience with Jason as did Frank Harper, currently serving as the Lodge Adviser of Ini-to Lodge of the Flint River Council. Frank and Jason have been friends and brothers for 30 years working together at the lodge, section, regional, and national levels. Congratulations, again, Jason! Mowogo Lodge and the Northeast Georgia Council are very proud of you and appreciate your service to Scouting and the Order of the Arrow over these many years.

NOAC2022 10

A special thanks to Brotherhood Brother Joseph McGahee who served as the Mowogo Contingent Leader and Vigil Honor Brother Howard Chalmers who served as the Mowogo Contingent Adviser. These brothers prepared our lodge to be well represented at NOAC. Thanks to all of advisers that attended the conference for sharing their time away from their families and work to serve our youth with a special shout out to Ms. Suzi Wiggs for jumping in to serve our female youth participants on short notice. Thanks to all of the Mowogo Lodge members that served the conference in various staff roles and represented our lodge with excellent examples of service and leadership. And thanks to all of you who could be with us but supported Mowogo Lodge to show such a large and important presence at NOAC.

I would like to end this message with something that brought what I believe is part of the essence of Mowogo Lodge. On Thursday, Day 4 of NOAC, Brother Jason Stribling let us know that he might need logistical support in preparing and staffing the Regional/Section Gathering planned for Thursday evening. Once the word went out, Mowogo Lodge contingent members prepared themselves if the call came to serve. As the time for the gathering came closer, Jason let us know that he needed help. Without hesitation, Mowogo Lodge did what it has always done…without question or concern we provided service to help Jason hold a successful event for thousands of Sisters and Brother from the Eastern Region of the Order of the Arrow. Mowogo Lodge is known beyond our lodge for the service we provide our council and our council properties. That same dedication to service was demonstrated at NOAC and was noticed. We can be proud in the knowledge that Mowogo Lodge is ready to serve no matter the setting or place.

Mowogo Lodge had a great 2022 NOAC experience. It is our hope as well as the hope of all those that put on the conference that all participants will take the experience of NOAC and make every lodge better and be examples of service and leadership for all who will follow in the years to come. If you were not able to attend the conference, please reach out to those that did and ask them to share what they learned, I feel confident you will be glad you did.

Chris Sartain

Good evening.

We hope this finds you well.

We reach out to you to share the news of the passing of Vigil Honor Brother Chris Sartain. Chris was a very active member of Mowogo Lodge in the 1980’s and 1990’s and served multiple terms as a Chapter Chief. His brother, Vigil Honor Brother Greg Sartain, is a former Lodge Chief and, his father, Vigil Honor Brother Max Sartain, served Mowogo Lodge in many capacities sharing his gift and skill as a mason on many service projects. The Arrow in the fireplace as well as the fireplace in the Dining Hall at Rainey Mountain was designed and constructed by the Sartains.

We are grateful for the time in fellowship and service Chris shared with Mowogo Lodge and Scouting. Arrangements have not been made at this time. If you would like and feel so moved to offer something, the family has requested donations be made in Chris’s name to:

Northeast Georgia Council, BSA
P.O. Box 399

Please keep the Sartain family in your thoughts and prayers as they endure this difficult time.

Summer Chief Program at Rainey Mountain

Greetings, Fellow Wearers of the Arrow!

I hope this finds you well and not too exhausted from another great Pre-Camp Fellowship. Welcome to all of our new Ordeal members! We welcome you to Mowogo Lodge. And congratulations to our new Brotherhood and Vigil Honor members! Thank you all for your part in preparing Rainey Mountain for another successful summer camp season. Thank you for your part in making that happen and in supporting the Lodge with your work. It is very much appreciated. Your support and efforts for the summer camp program at Rainey Mountain is also very much appreciated and has in many ways set Mowogo Lodge up for success as we move forward in our support of the outdoor programs of Northeast Georgia Council.

Our trading post and name-tag operations have been very popular for those that have attended Rainey Mountain for summer camp. In 2019, Mowogo Lodge first opened the Scouting Museum of Northeast Georgia for those campers to enjoy and to be inspired by our history. We did not open the museum in 2020 due to the public health concern of recent years. As we were still coming out of that concern in early 2021, we did not plan to re-open operations as we did not know what the summer would hold for summer camp. During the 2021 camp season, we received communication asking about the lodge and the Order of the Arrow presence during summer camp and requests for the museum be open for campers and guests and quick arrangements were made to make that happen to meet that demand.

In studying how to best meet the demand for a presence from the Lodge and the Order of the Arrow as an integrated part of the overall summer camp program at Rainey Mountain, we have been working with the camp administration over this past year. As a result, 2022 will be the inauguration of the “Summer Chief” program sponsored by Mowogo Lodge and administered by the Summer Camp Administration. This has been a great partnership and we are excited to start this new program. This program fulfills the purpose of the Order of the Arrow to support Scout camping and in addition to Mowogo Lodge’s continued support of our council programs, facilities, and properties.

We are proud to have our own Brother Patrick McNair, current Mowogo Lodge Vice Chief of Indian Affairs, serve as our first Summer Chief at Rainey Mountain in 2022. We are also excited to have Jacob Taylor who will work with Patrick and serve in this role when Patrick will be away this summer. Jacob is a former Lodge Chief (2020) from the Bob White Lodge of the Georgia-Carolina Council who is also serving on the Rainey Mountain Camp Staff. These brothers will serve as points of contact concerning Order of the Arrow programs and inquiries during camp. As of now, Wednesdays of each week during the summer camp season will provide focus on the Order of the Arrow.

Here are some of the highlights of Summer Chief responsibilities:

As a first and to meet the demand that has been expressed to the camp administration in recent years, Ordeal Candidate elections will be offered to those troops that request these be done during their summer camp experience. Units from other councils may participate in this program with required approval of the home lodge and council. Current members of Mowogo Lodge attending with their respective troops will be encouraged to assist and support in conducting these elections.

The camp program will include five area campfires each week. At the introduction of each campfire program will be a brief program about the Order of the Arrow and Mowogo Lodge. Members of the Order serving on the Camp Staff will also be a part of this program coordinated by the Summer Chief(s).

A social activity is being planned with details being fleshed out as the camp administration begins their planning and preparations for the 2022 season over the next weeks. This will also be coordinated by the Summer Chief(s).

The Scouting Museum of Northeast Georgia will again be open for campers and guests to enjoy this summer. Each Chapter of Mowogo Lodge has accepted the responsibility of providing members to serve as Docents to guide visitors through the displays, answer questions, and as representatives of Mowogo Lodge. Below are the Chapters and the week of Summer Camp each will serve:

Summer Camp Week Date (Wednesdays) Chapter
Week 1 June 8 Yona-Hi
Week 2 June 15 Lau-in-nih
Week 3 June 22 Jutaculla
Week 4 June 29 Canantutlaga
Week 5 July 6 Ani-Gatogewi
Week 6 July 13 Machque
Week 7 July 20 Japeechen

We are excited for the Summer Chief program. I have always believed that the summer camp program is the most important part of the annual troop program as Scouting was first born in a long-term encampment when Lord Baden-Powell applied his experiential ideas on Brownsea Island in 1907. Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson developed the idea of recognizing campers who they thought best exemplified the ideals of Scouting during summer camp at the Treasure Island Scout Reservation in 1915 that has become what today is the Order of the Arrow. To be able to enhance the summer camp program at Rainey Mountain provides a personal sense of gratification for me. Serving as a member of the Camp Staff and of Mowogo Lodge as a youth were the most important and formative experiences in my Scouting career.

We would like to thank all of those that have and continue to serve Mowogo Lodge at Summer Camp: Brother John Hanes who serves as our Lodge Trading Post Adviser, Brother Mike Hyde who provides custom name tags for campers, and Brother Kevin Jones who serves as our Lodge Memorabilia Adviser and all others that support these operations. We would also like to thank the Northeast Georgia Council staff and administration, our own Phil Nichols (Lodge Staff Adviser and Council Program Director) as well as the Rainey Mountain Camp Administration led by the outstanding Brandon Parham (Camp Director) who provides superior quality to our programs at Rainey Mountain. They’re support continues to make our lodge and council programs reach for excellence. And a special thanks to our Lodge Chief, Jacob Ball, for his leadership in bringing the Summer Chief program to life and to Patrick McNair and Jacob Taylor for being the first to execute it! We continue to enjoy outstanding youth leadership and we do not take that for granted.

If you will be participating in the Summer Camp program at Rainey Mountain this summer or serving as a member of the Camp Staff, please seek out Patrick McNair and Jacob Taylor to see if you can help them increase the awareness of the Order of the Arrow and Mowogo Lodge.

Thanks, again, for all you do to serve the youth we all serve.

Yours in Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service!

Mowogo Lodge Shines at First Ever E6 Section Conclave!

Greetings, Mowogo Lodge!

Mowogo Lodge just completed its participation in the first ever E6 Section Conclave with a great experience and successful showings among our brothers and sisters in the event.

Mowogo Lodge finished first in the Ultimate Frisbee as well as third in the Wischixin and Tug-of-War Quest competitions and first in the website and second in the Planbook and Newsletter Administrative competitions among the nine other lodges in our Section.   In addition, Brother James Chalmers of Mowogo Lodge was elected to serve as the E6 Section Chief for 2022-2023 this morning at the Section Business Meeting that concluded the Conclave event.   Congratulations to our own James Chalmers!

Perhaps most important is that Mowogo Lodge was recognized as being in first place for the Conclave Spirit Award.  This recognition demonstrates that all of the Mowogo Lodge Conclave Contingent members shined very brightly during the entirety of the event.  Thanks, and congratulations to all who worked very hard to represent the best of Mowogo Lodge at the Conclave and helped to demonstrate the tremendous genuine spirit of the Order of the Arrow in the Northeast Georgia Council, BSA, to honored Scouts and Scouters from Alabama and Georgia!  Many thanks to our Lodge Chief, Jacob Ball (who also completed his term as Section Secretary at this Conclave), and Lodge Vice Chief of Finance, Joseph McGahee, for serving as our Lodge Conclave Contingent Leader to assist our Lodge Chief!  Great work!

Conclave2022

Thanks also to Mr. Britt Bramblett and all of our Advisers for stepping in and serving our contingent at this inaugural E6 Section Conclave!

Keep moving forward, Mowogo…Mowogo…MOWOGO…MOWOGO…MOWOGO!!!

Winter Banquet

Greetings, fellow wearers of the Arrow!

The Winter Banquet promotions have begun. For the first time, this event will be held in the Dining Hall at Rainey Mountain. Since this will require some travel time for some of our members, the event will begin at 4:00PM that Saturday, December 4. That will allow some of our members to be able to get home at a fairly decent time.

Thanks and we are looking forward to seeing all of you there.
If you haven't registered yet, please follow this link to sign up: Winter Banquet Registration
