MOWOGO - Elangomat Training!

Hello Mowogo Lodge!

I am excited to announce the 2024 Elangomat training dates! As you know, Elangomats are the brothers who help to guide new Ordeal candidates through their Ordeal during Mowogo Lodge's three annual induction weekends: Spring Fellowship, Pre-Camp, and Fall Fellowship. We need as many of you as possible to become trained Elangomats to help make this year a success for both our Lodge and for the new Candidates.

The training will last from 9:30 A.M. until 1:30 P.M. unless otherwise stated. There is no cost for the training, but you will need to bring your own lunch. Please also bring a water bottle, work gloves, work clothes, a notebook and pen, and a raincoat.

The scheduled dates are as follows:

  • January 20th - Scoutland
  • February 3rd - Woodruff Scout Camp, Starts at 12:30pm (Will be held as a part of Machque Brotherhood Day)
  • February 17th - Scoutland (Admin Building)
  • March 9th - Scoutland (Craft Shack)

There will also be 2 dates between Spring Fellowship and Pre-Camp, so expect those dates sometime soon.

One of the most important pieces of our Ordeal weekends is the Elangomats. This is such a necessary role that has the potential to make or break the experience of the candidates.

The role of the Elangomat is simple - be a friend to the candidates. You serve with them throughout the day, staying silent, and eating little. It is an opportunity for you as an Arrowman to lead by example and demonstrate the cheerful service of our brotherhood.

If you are interested in serving at one (or more) of our Ordeal weekends this year, and either have not been previously trained or would like to be eligible for Wolf Clan this year, please register to attend one of the training dates and locations listed.

Pay special attention and note that our first Elangomat training is NEXT WEEKEND at Scoutland. Registration is on the Mowogo Website, and it is completely free to sign up. As our brothers who have previously served will tell you, the experience is life changing and helps to remind you of the purpose of our Order. I look forward to seeing you all at one of our Elangomat trainings!

Indian Affairs Workday - February 24th

Good afternoon Arrowmen!

The Spring Induction season is quickly approaching. We have work to do at CRM: both repairing ceremony rings and getting ready for the ceremonies. To accomplish this, we will be having an IA workday on February 24th from 9:00-3:00. We have plenty of work to do; ALL ARE WELCOME!

I will send out a list of projects and tools closer to the event.

Yours in Brotherhood,

Andrew Chalmers
Vice Chief of Indian Affairs, Mowogo Lodge

Sign-Up Now! NLS and DYLC

Hello everyone,

I would like to personally ask each and every one of you to consider a leadership course offered by the Eastern Region. The youth can attend the National Leadership Seminar, or NLS, and the adults are able to attend the Developing Youth Leadership Conference.

The National Leadership Seminar (NLS) is a weekend training program focusing on leadership development. Run by the Region Chief and his Advisers, it provides an in-depth look at leadership skills and techniques. You will learn how these skills can be applied in your role in the OA and in other aspects of your life. The National Leadership Seminar is a weekend conference on the skills and attributes of leadership. It is intended primarily to enhance the leadership skills of the Order of the Arrow’s key youth and adult members as they seek to improve their services to the Boy Scouts of America and the greater community. Near the end of the seminar, participants make a contract with themselves to apply the skills studied in the seminar on projects in their lodge, council, and community.

Adults age 21 and older are eligible to attend the Developing Youth Leadership Conference (DYLC) and do not necessarily need to have previously attended NLS but it is recommended. Adults who are currently or will soon hold a lodge-level or chapter-level adviser position are encouraged to attend DYLC. The NLS training is open to anyone seeking to hone their leadership skills applicable to Scouting as well as daily life.

The course dates and locations for NLS and DYLC 2024 are as follows:

  • January 26–28 in Columbia, South Carolina
  • February 16–18 in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico
  • March 8–10th in Loveland, Ohio
  • September 13–15th in Alpine, New Jersey
  • November 1–3 in Thompson's Station, Tennessee

You can go to the National Order of the Arrow Event Registration System of NOAERS and select which course you choose and sign up there. Click the link to be directed to the NOAERS National Order of the Arrow Event Registration System.

NLS Scholarship Opportunity: Section E6 is offering a half scholarship to five Arrowmen who apply. The scholarship will cover half the cost of NLS. You can go to the section website and find the application under the NLS tab, and at the bottom of the page will be the application. You can also click the link Section E6: NLS and DYLC, and it will direct you to the right page.

Chief Thought: I attended NLS in Alabama in 2022, and I can easily say it was one of the best scouting experiences I've ever had. I created lifelong bonds with arrowmen from all across the region that I would've never had otherwise. Not to mention the skills I learned from NLS allowed me to provide a better and more enjoyable experience for the brothers around me once I returned home to Mowogo. I highly encourage you to attend, and honestly, I encourage you to attend the one in South Carolina because it's the earliest one and the closest for a while. The other ones are either quite a trip or all the way in November.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or any of the section officers.

P.S. Chapters can earn black bear points for having their members attend NLS/DYLC.

Alex Sutter
